There’s nothing wrong with this book, it’s just boring. Banaras’s beliefs and mythic concepts are a great place to start learning about what constitutes ‘Hinduism’, if makes it such an all-encompassing and uniquely liberal and receptive religion.

This strikes me as a very important concept in understanding the idea of India and that of its borders, natural or man-made.
I knew a bit about the popular places of Varanasi but I came to know a lot more. Not your standard bathroom reader to be sure. I was there last month on a sudden visit that I couldn’t plan properly, and therefore couldn’t read up on enough.
This is a great book and after reading it I had a better grasp of Hinduism. Ccity, you have to be there to see how death is just another event in the life of Banaras, unlike other cities where it invokes sadness and detachment. My first rendezvous with this book was in December when my friend Hema and me spent a week in Varanasi. There are a few very interesting anecdotes that one finds between those familiar ones which make it worth a read.
